According to the current legislation in Australia, only certain individuals and organizations can register a COM AU domain name for their website. The list of these people includes:
- Individuals who are residing in Australia;
- Australian companies;
- Australian registered businesses;
- Non-profit organizations which exist solely within Australia;
- Owners of an Australian trademark or patent.
Unfortunately, if you do not fit into any of these categories, it is impossible to register a COM AU domain name for your website. If you wish to use such a domain name, it might be possible for you to donate it to an organization that fits one of the above categories and can take control over this particular domain name.
To get a COM AU domain name, you need to follow these three steps:
1. Find out which are the available names
2. Reserve the desired name
3. Register it with an accredited registrar for an appropriate period of time (it usually has to be at least two years).
Some individuals and organizations might not want access to their com au domain name being made public in the WHOIS directory, so this is something you can find out when talking to your preferred registrar about reserving your selected name.
Currently, the .au domain name registry is run by auDA. This is an organization that has to abide by the rules set up by ARI.
The letters AU stand for Australia while DA stands for Domain Administration. Thus, auDA means 'Domain Administration of Australia.'
The primary responsibility of auDA is to provide an efficient and stable internet for all Australian residents.
Another important task of auDA is protecting individual privacy, intellectual property rights and preventing cybercrime which often targets individuals through their online presence.
The price for a .com.au domain name is very affordable, probably one of the most affordable country-code top-level domains (ccTLD) on the market today.
The cost may vary slightly depending on which registrar you choose, and also it depends on how long you wish to register your chosen name for.
However, it's safe to say that the average price of a 2 year registration period will be around $50 per year.
If you're interested in registering your own com au domain name, then look at SpamZilla Registrar Compare tool.
The Australian DNS Administration (auDA) is the regulatory body that regulates the usage of the .au domain space.
Under the auDA, domains registered with .com.au, net.au, and .org.au must be registered by: sole traders, businesses, and companies to register an ABN or an Australian Company Number (ACN) to operate in Australia under the auDA.
However, you can get an ABN even if you are a freelancer or work for yourself out of your home office; in this instance, you will be issued a Temporary Business Number (TBN).
The TBN will be valid for 12 months, after which time you should apply for an ABN online through the Australian Taxation Office website.
The main difference between the .com.au and net AU is in their respective registration policies, particularly who can register them.
A .com.au domain name may be registered by anyone that fits into any of the categories permitted within Australian Law. In contrast, a .net.au domain name may only be registered by an entity that falls under one of these recognized groups:
- Registered businesses;
- Individuals residing in Australia;
- Associations with an address in Australia (both non-profit associations and unions);
- Organisations that are based out of Australia but where membership is open to people around the world;
- Non-profit organizations which exist solely within Australia;
An individual residing overseas cannot register a .net.au domain name, even if that overseas individual has an Australian address.
.com.au, .net.au, .id.au, .edu.au, .gov.au
In addition to the three generic top-level. Au domains (i.e., com, net, and org ), five second-level domains have been delegated by the auDA to represent various sectors of the Australian community. These are:
- .edu.au, representing educational institutions in Australia;
- .gov.au, representing all Australian government bodies;
- .id. au (identity), an open domain for individuals to use when they want to represent themselves online;
- .asn.au (associations), representing Australian non-profit associations and
unions; and
- .nbn. au (national broadband network), representing the National Broadband Network.
