At the beginning of the internet, there were only a handful of top-level domains. .com was for commercial use, and .edu was for educational institutions.
There were also other extensions such as .gov and .org which still exist today. But now we’ve got a whole new set of options to choose from country code top-level domain names (ccTLDs).
One example is the Hong Kong ccTLD (.hk), which is administered by HKIRC—the Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation Limited.
HKIRC has been in charge since 1997 when it replaced HKSAR Government Registry as administrator. In that time they have registered more than 2 million domain names under their administration, making them one of Asia's largest registrars.
It’s easy! Just visit our HK domain management page and type in the domain you want to register. If it is available, click “check availability”. If your desired name is not available, let us know so we can take care of it for you.
Anyone can register a .hk domain name. However, the person or entity who owns the registration must be located in Hong Kong.
This means that companies outside of Hong Kong cannot own a .hk domain name unless they have an office based out of Hong Kong. And individuals outside of Hong Kong cannot register .hk domain names unless they are located in Hong Kong.
The .hk TLD is hugely popular within the community because it uniquely represents Hong Kong and it will help to boost awareness of your brand or product if you have a .hk domain name.
If you live outside of Hong Kong or if your business is based outside of Hong Kong, a .com used to be the best choice.
But now, with so much Chinese content being created online, people will prefer to find a business or brand that has a .hk domain name rather than one with a .com.
The common rules of registration are:
You can buy a .hk domain name for $15 per year and renew at $20 per year.
It's not hard to see why people have gravitated towards this extension in the last few years—it’s a simple way to show that your business is based out of Hong Kong without having to worry about infringing on any trademarks or using an offensive term. It’s also one of the most affordable domains in this category with an attractive price-to-performance ratio.
