The first-level .ir domain is reserved for use by individuals with an Iranian identity number registered through IRNIC (Iran Network Information Center). To register a second level .ir domain under one of these top-level domains, the registrant must provide their full name, email address and country of residence.
According to IRNIC, anyone with a valid ID card can register a .ir domain name. The identity number of the person registering the domain must be included in both form A and B, which are submitted online to register .ir domains.
Once your application for registration has been accepted by IRNIC, you will receive an email notification with your domain name’s password. The next step is to go back online and enter all of the required information, which includes hosting details, DNS configuration, etc.
Some examples of prohibited domains include pornographic sites; gambling websites; sites that promote violence or hatred toward religious groups; and those that violate Iran’s laws.
Apart from the main .ir domain, users can choose from a range of second-level .ir domains to create the website they want. Some common second-level .ir domains include:
·.ac.ir – This is used by academic organizations or institutions in Iran, including universities and research centers.
·.co.ir – This is typically assigned to businesses within Iran’s private sector companies, but can also be assigned to non-profit entities that operate within Iran.
·.gov.ir – This is assigned to government organizations in Iran, such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and provincial governments.
·.id.ir – This provides a domain for individuals using an Iranian ID number when registering their .ir domain name with IRNIC (see below).
·.net.ir – This is typically assigned to ISPs and internet service providers within Iran’s private sector companies, but can also be used by non-profit entities that operate within Iran.
·.org.ir – This provides a domain for individuals using an Iranian ID number when registering their .ir domain name with IRNIC (see below).
·.sch.ir – This provides a domain for schools within Iran’s private sector companies, but can also be used by non-profit entities that operate in Iran.
Foreign companies are allowed to register for an Iranian top level domain if they have an affiliate in Iran, but the company must be registered with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance. For foreign residents or individuals living abroad, you must provide your full name, national number (if an Iranian resident), email address and country of residence.
The annual fee for a .ir domain name is anything between $50 and $100, depending on the domain name itself and the registrar in question. This includes the cost of the domain name, its registration and transfer.
