The domain .li is for Liechtenstein. It is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Liechtenstein, which traces its roots back to the personal domain of the Princely Family of Liechtenstein. The princely family acquired its .li ccTLD in 1989.
A .li ccTLD means that each person who registers their own web address must have a primary residence in Switzerland's Alpine neighbour to take advantage of this particular TLD - although you should be aware that registration rules are being tightened ahead of May 1st 2013.
As of that date, domain name registration is split into two categories - "European Union residents" and "Non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals".
In layman's terms, this means that anyone in the EU can purchase a .li domain name while all other people must use another suffix such as .com/.net etc.
Specifically, you can register a .li address for personal or business use if:
You are an individual domiciled or resident in Liechtenstein; You are an enterprise domiciled or established in Liechtenstein; Your website is for the purpose of deriving income from within the European Union (EU) area.
As of May 1st, 2013, Liechtenstein's .li ccTLD Registry is operated by nic.li AG, a private limited company owned by the State of Liechtenstein regulated by law and supervised by the Financial Market Authority in Vaduz.
The Registry is responsible for all registrations in its zone under both Categories. It also manages requests to change information in the registry database pertaining to a specific domain name and administers all DNS servers for this zone.
Note: As of January 2nd 2014, Nic.Li AG has been appointed as the registry operator for .LI top-level domain names (both from European Union residents and from non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals).
First of all, it's important to understand why you should choose a .li domain name. It's the only domain suffix that gives you access to over 12 million people in Europe who are online looking for goods and services. You have full control of your website so there are no ongoing fees to pay as with other providers.
The registration process is simple and your business will be given 800x more visibility on Google than competing websites with other suffixes because of the increase in traffic.
