How can I register a .uy domain name?

.uy is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Uruguay, it's short and easy to remember.

You can register a .uy domain name by making an order at any of our registrars supporting this extension like Godaddy or Namecheap.

You only need to provide your desired domain name, your preferred username (which you will use later on when logging into our order system), and a password which will be generated automatically if you don't already have one registered with us. All our users are required to have a Personal Information Manager (PIM), which is registered in the registrar section of your account settings interface.

Every username must have at least 6 characters, although it's preferable to have longer names since shorter ones can be easily forgotten or mistyped. The password needs to be 7 characters long and composed only of numbers and letters at least 1 of each.

You will also need to provide your real name, organization's name if any, address including postal code, phone number, fax number (if available), your country of origin, and -optional- your e-mail address.

All this information is required for us to be able to communicate with you should there arise any issues with your order.

What are the registration restrictions for a .uy domain name?

The only restriction regarding the registration of the domain name is that it must be between 3 and 63 characters long.

It can also contain letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), and dashes (-). It cannot begin or end with dashes.

Why choose a .uy domain name?

Uruguay is a country in South America, thus the .uy domain extension represents this region and makes it easy to remember for everyone staying here or interested in learning more about us.

A .uy web address will help you reach a wider audience precisely because of its specificity.

The .uy domain extension is also very well known since the TLDs are meant to be representative of what they stand for, which makes it easy to remember by people who are already familiar with this fact. What's more, there is only one extension specifically representing Uruguay among all the other Internet extensions available here, which makes it even more prestigious.

Uruguay is a democratic country, thus the .uy extension is internationally recognized and respected among all other extensions for being where free speech has been practiced since 1830.

Who controls the .uy domain names?

The United States Department of Commerce, through its agent Radix Registry LLC, owns and controls the .uy domain names. The Uruguayan government approved a contract authorizing Radix Registry LLC as manager of this TLD for a span of 10 years starting from 1 August 2011.

Can you register .uy Domain Without Local Presence?

If you have an Uruguayan hosting provider, then it's possible to register a .uy name without having a physical presence in the country.

What documents do you need to register .uy Domain Name?

-A copy of your ID card or passport (which must be valid), showing your address.

-Proof of your residence within Uruguay, such as a utility bill or phone/Internet bill showing it's being paid from the specified address or -in case of renting- an authorization letter signed by the landlord, specifying your right to reside in the property.

Also, if you are not an Uruguayan citizen, make sure to provide us with written proof that you have implicit consent from Uruguayan authorities regarding your stay within our country. This can be achieved through any of the following:

-A copy of your current visa or permit to stay in Uruguay.

-If you are a naturalized Uruguayan citizen -or a foreigner who acquired Uruguayan citizenship-, proof of this fact will do.
