What is the .wiki domain name?

The .wiki top-level domain is intended for use by wiki websites, allowing them to register usernames that are an alternative to their existing names.

A wiki is a website designed for user collaboration over the Internet. It includes tools for creating and structuring content on individual web pages as well as wikis themselves.

The collaborative efforts of Wikipedia provide just one notable example of what can be accomplished with wikis. Wikis are operated through servers known as wiki farms, which allow for a highly democratic form of user control.

How will this work?

When a wiki community registers for the .wiki top-level domain, it can use that name to advertise its real-life hierarchy.

A country's wiki farm could be administered by a government agency or a private organization. In either case, using a dedicated .wiki makes it easy to link from websites around the world to any wiki associated with that location.

In addition to reflecting existing hierarchies, new logic and structure may also emerge from the choice of domain names for locales.

Why is the .wiki domain name important and what does it mean for wiki communities?

The .wiki top-level domain is intended to be used by wiki communities as a way of connecting their online identity to the offline space they occupy.

For some, this connection may take place on a local level, as in the case of an individual school's student newspaper that uses its website as a complement to its printed version.

For others, this connection may take place on a global scale – perhaps with an organization like Amnesty International – allowing people from across the world to join forces and make their voices heard together.

Who will be able to register a .wiki domain name?

Any wiki farm wishing to participate in the .wiki top-level domain can do so through an open registration process.

Website owners that are interested in building their presence on the Internet will be able to register their own .wiki domain name under this TLD.

The .wiki top-level domain will be available to wiki communities across the world.

Only verified members of a community can create usernames within that community, ensuring that each username is held by the appropriate individual or organization.

How do I register a .wiki domain name?

For the first year of the .wiki top-level domain's operation, newly created namespaces will be reserved exclusively for wiki communities.

Once this period has elapsed, anyone else will be able to register a .wiki namespace through one of our registry service partners or through any other registrar that is authorized to sell open TLDs domains.

To qualify for a .wiki top-level domain, a wiki must also have a signed agreement with its home wiki farm in order to verify that it meets community standards and is able to operate cohesively within the wiki community.

Each qualified wiki farm may register up to 10 individual usernames under their own TLD. This allows each farming website to track contributions from individuals by username across communities if desired.

In addition, this TLD provides an option for wikis of all sizes by allowing users to access members-only sections of public websites or create new usernames without having an account on the host wiki's server.
